Discount Contact Lenses

July 21st, 2008

Contact lenses are very popular, both for cosmetic and medical reasons. Contact lenses now come in so many colors that we have a great range of choices available. However, the best way to obtain the right type of lenses for you would be to contact your ophthalmologist, optometrist or optician, who would be able to advise and guide you on what will be the best option for your eyes.

Even though contact lenses are more popularly known for cosmetic reasons, many have forgotten that contact lenses are actually medical devices that can only be fitted by an eye-care practitioner. It is important to learn the right method of placing the lenses in your eyes so that you do not damage your eyes in the process. In the United States, it is not possible to legally purchase contact lenses unless you have a valid written prescription by a qualified eye-care practitioner.

There are various types of contact lenses to suit the needs of different individuals. Various types of contact lenses that are available on the market include disposable contact lenses, contact lenses for extended wear, gas permeable (GP) contact lenses or RGP lenses, contact lenses for those with astigmatism, bifocal contacts for those who are used to wearing bifocal glasses, costume or colored lenses for the purpose of just adding color to your eyes, and also contact lenses for those who have difficulties in fitting the normal lenses in their eyes.

Contact lenses, which were once thought to be quite pricey, have now become affordable to almost anyone, thanks to the innovative manufacturers who have found cost-effective ways to manufacture lenses of high quality. There are various manufacturers of contact lenses in the market these days, so prices have also become very competitive, with numerous discounts available.

What is So Great About RGP Contact Lenses

July 20th, 2008

So, I have your interest and you want to know more about RGP contact lenses. Well good, you are now on the right track to learn more about the cutting edge technology of this corrective eye wear.

Gas permeable (GP) which are also known as (RGP) rigid gas permeable and oxygen permeable lenses are literally light years ahead of the old hard contact lenses.

When you get right down to the bottom line truth about RGP contact lenses, you are getting down to some really serious medicine for people with vision difficulties.

Let’s first talk about the old style hard contact lenses. Remember those! These contacts originally came out in 1945, and were made with a material known as polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA), boy that was a mouthful.

Now as I was saying, PMMA which is an emorphous thermoplastic with good optical qualities was used in just about all contact lenses prior to the soft lenses hitting the market in the 1970’s.

Which unfortunately for contact lense wearers back then was very uncomfortable and very difficult to get used to if you could.

But not only that! PMMA lenses was just not healthy for your eyes because they did not allow oxygen to pass through. Now this is one of the main reason’s scientists invented soft lenses and looked into the future about RGP contact lenses.

Ok, out with the old and in with the new.

Let’s talk about RGP contact lenses now. Gas permeable lenses first came out in the 1980’s. Now instead of PMMA, RGPs were made from silicone, which is more flexible than PMMA and more importantly they also allow oxygen to pass through the lenses to the eye.

This is vitally important for healthy eyes.

Now keep this in mind also, RGP contact lenses even allow more oxygen to get through to the eye than many soft contact lenses.

So the bottom line is, not only are RGP contact lenses more comfortable to wear but they are healthier for your eyes. This makes your eyes happy on all counts.

Now if that wasn’t enough here is another benefit of RGP contact lenses that doctors and contact lense wearers are excited about and that is RGP contact lenses are more durable and resistant to protein deposits than soft lenses.

Plus, they can actually help you see better. You’ll also find that they are easier to clean, cheaper to buy, and last longer.

But…there always has to be a but somewhere doesn’t there…

Still as beneficial as RGP contact lenses are, they are still not for everyone.

They are best for people who have trouble getting great results from regular soft lenses. These could include people who are just very picky when it comes to their vision.

Or for people whose eyes have certain disorders that makes vision correction more difficult. This includes sufferers of astigmatism, who often find soft contacts lacking when it comes to vision correction.

Free Samples of Contact Lenses Free Giveaways or Shameful Promotions

July 19th, 2008

So, you are looking for free samples of contact lenses? Perhaps you saw a commercial that said “visit our website for a coupon to receive free samples of contact lenses.” Or, “see your eye care provider today for your free pair of so and so lenses.”

While this a great way for lens manufacturers to have you try their brand of contact lenses, most contact lens fitters do not require such coupons.

In order to get free samples of contact lenses, that particular lens must still be fit to your eye. Therefore you must still visit your eye care specialist. A properly fit soft contact lens must center correctly, move slightly with a blink, match the contour of your eye, and correct your vision. Any lens that does not meet all those minimum criteria does not fit. So why bother with some free samples of contact lenses that won’t work for you?

Here is a secret the other websites and commercial advertisements might not be telling you: You don’t need a coupon to get free samples of contact lenses.

If you are having issues with your current lenses, or have never worn lenses before, your specialist will fit you with something different. Depending on the type of fit, your lens fitter may have diagnostic lenses in the office for evaluation. If the diagnostic contact lenses are a good fit, chances are you can take them home to try out (yes, even without a coupon).

There are some instances where free samples of contact lenses can not be handed out. For example, if you do not wear a pre-packaged, disposable contact lens. Non disposable lenses are not given to eye care providers as diagnostic tools and therefore will need to be ordered per case. Also, gas permeable contacts can not be given out as free samples. Every gas permeable contact lens is made per specs for an individual patient; therefore it would not be possible to have free samples on hand.

So you can search out coupons for free samples of contact lenses, or you can let your specialist decide which lenses might be a better option for you.
